The Scarborough Model Railroaders have been working on these layouts for many years. I hadn't dropped by for almost twenty years. Their location is more than two hours from where I live.
It was certainly worth the visit.
The N scale layout hadn't even been started the last time I was there. They have a dozen or so working on the N scale layout, but I was told that most of the work has been accomplished by about six of them.
The work is quite remarkable.
This layout is 1000 square feet and has 28 scale miles of double-track mainline running through mountain scenery and industrial areas. It is billed as the only permanent N scale club layout in the Greater Trotonto area.
Downstiars is the 1500 square foot HO scale layout. It is set in the 1950s and depicts southern Ontario. It features authentic steam and diesel sound and full operations.
They use a novel method of keeping track of freight cars during switching moves.
I've added their technique to my page on Operations Methods.
Have a look at some video clips I took with my camera on movie setting. The video starts with the N scale layout and some very long freight trains. They tell me it's not uncommon to see trains of more than 100 cars pulled by a 4-locomotive consist.
Below are photos of the club layouts taken during their Open House
The first group is of the N scale layout. Click on the thumbnails for a larger view.

This is the original one of their club layouts.
There are lots of pictures of train layouts if you go to my Photo Gallery. Lots of inspiration for modeling!
