Yes, the roof opens and closes as you watch!
This is an introduction to a spectacular model railroad being built in Toronto, Canada that I was fortunate to see at a preview Open House. The railroad is not open to the public yet. It is still in the "pilot" phase. For now mainly the downtown Toronto area is depicted and some surrounding areas are under construction. The dream is to build a representative sampling of all of Canada similar in concept to the famous model train layout in Hamburg, Germany. Thus far $2.3 million has been spent during the past two years to get it to its current state. There are 6 full-time employees working on it and many volunteers contributing as extra hands. The hope is to find more investors and a home in downtown Toronto near the CN Tower or in the roundhouse and open Our Home and Miniature Land to the paying public as a tourist attraction.
Here is a video I took at the Open House to whet your appetite.
There are models of the Distillery District, Don River and the Bloor Street Viaduct with subway trains crossing. There are many animated scenes such as the Purolator truck and the man on the bicycle in the video. The steel complex is an amazing set of structures. There are ship models poised for display on the Welland Canal near the loops shown at the end of the video. There are lots of signs showing where future scenes will be added, such as the Botanical Gardens. I believe Ottawa is slated for the next expansion as the railroad is developed beyond Toronto.
This layout is actually modular because it is meant to be moved once a downtown location is secured. Keep your fingers crossed that sufficient investors can be found to turn this into a commercial success.
